Midtown Liquor Store Using Technology to Prevent Illegal Sales to Minors

Mac's Beer & Wine is using a bar code scanning system called Age ID, and so far, more than 100 fake IDs have been confiscated.

ATLANTA, GA -- Mac’s Beer & Wine is using a technology solution to help prevent the illegal sale of alcohol to minors.

The Midtown retailer is using Intellicheck‘s Age ID® to scan bar codes on driver licenses and other forms of identification to spot altered and fake IDs.

Midtown’s residents include some 32,000 students attending nearby colleges. Store owner Arthur “Mac” Thurston has been in business for 29 years.

“Since we began using Age ID, we’ve confiscated nearly 100 fake IDs,” he said. “I’m using Age ID on our registers and smartphones to make sure we stop minors from purchasing alcohol. I’m a father and this is my community, too. I take my legal responsibility to remain compliant with legal purchase age laws, very seriously.”

Recent statistics show the cost of underage drinking to Georgia is more than $1 billion per year.

The technology reads the barcode data encoded on driver licenses and government issued IDs, instantly verifying the authenticity of the ID and age information via a mobile device or with an integrated point of sale tool. It has the ability to read more than 200 unique DMV barcode formats from every U.S. state and Canadian province.
