Traffic Concerns Cause Delay of Music Midtown Application Approval

Event promoters were given more time to work with the city to develop a traffic plan that appeases neighborhood residents.

The special event application for Music Midtown will not be reviewed by Neighborhood Planning Unit-E (NPU-E) until Sept. 2, just under three weeks before the event is scheduled to begin, SaportaReport says.

During their Tuesday meeting, NPU-E decided to table the application vote to allow promoter Live Nation more time to work with City of Atlanta officials to tweak the traffic routing plan for the Piedmont Park music festival which will take place from Sept. 19-20.

On July 31, the Midtown Neighbors Association voted against the event application, citing a traffic routing plan that would put undue strain on residents. Access Atlanta reported that the group was concerned about large amounts of traffic being detoured down 8th and Myrtle Streets.

Live Nation has made several concessions to residents, including the prohibition of sound checks before 10 a.m., extra bike racks, parking restricted to residents only, and the number of portable toilets was increased to 350.

Neither the vote against Music Midtown’s application by the Midtown Neighbor’s Association nor NPU-E’s decision to wait on a revised special events application are expected to cause any delay or cancellation of the event itself, which is entering its third year.
