Voter Registration Group Under Investigation for Alleged Fraud

The New Georgia Project is accused of voter registration fraud and must submit documents to the Secretary of State's office by Sept 16.

A voter registration group affiliated with a nonprofit organized by the Georgia House of Representatives’ top Democrat has been subpoenaed by the Georgia Secretary of State in response to allegations of fraudulent voter registration activity.

According to WSB-TV, the Secretary of State’s office has ordered the New Georgia Project to turn over documents that may reveal voter fraud by Sept. 16. Complaints filed against the New Georgia Project claim the organization has been submitting fraudulent voter registration applications to elections officials in Bartow, Butts, Gwinnett, Henry, DeKalb, and Muscogee counties.

Secretary of State Brian Kemp said in a memo quoted by WSB-TV that a preliminary investigation of the organization has largely corroborated the allegations made in the complaints. Some of the alleged illegal activities included providing false or inaccurate information for new voters, forging signatures on release forms, and forging voter registration applications.

The New Georgia Project is the voter registration wing of Third Sector Development, a nonprofit organization created by House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams (D-Atlanta).

Abrams released a statement expressing sadness at the news of the subpoena, and claimed that the New Georgia Project had worked closely with the Secretary of State’s office to ensure all voter registration activities the group engaged in were legitimate.
