Join Gwinnett Medical Center and Delete Blood Cancer (DKMS) as they host a drive for the Bone Marrow Donor Registry on Thursday, June 27. GMC is providing a second opportunity to join the registry, this time in Duluth! The drive will take place on Thursday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth Cafeteria, 3620 Howell Ferry Road, Duluth, Georgia 30096. No need to RSVP; simply stop by!
Thousands of patients with life-threatening blood diseases depend on the national registry to find matching donors who can save their lives. Patients need donors who are a close genetic match, but only 30 percent find a match within their own family. Even within a registry of millions, five out of 10 patients NEVER receive the lifesaving transplant they need. Currently, there is a great need for people of varying ethnicities to join the registry and give others hope for a second chance.
Joining the registry is simple. You must be 18-55 years old, in good general health, weigh at least 110 pounds, have a maximum body mass index (BMI) of 40, and be willing to donate to any patient in need. At the drive, you will complete a registration form and have the inside of your cheek swabbed to collect cells for tissue typing. That’s it!
