NORCROSS, GA — Two people are dead following a multi-vehicle accident Saturday morning on Interstate 85 near Jimmy Carter Boulevard, an accident that prompted a portion of the interstate to close in both directions.

The closure was a result of a massive tractor-trailer fire that broke out as a result of the accident. As police approached the scene, the trailer — which was carrying thousands of gallons of gasoline — exploded. The fuel then entered a nearby sewer drain, prompting the fire to spread to the southbound lanes of I-85.

Two people were killed in the crash, according to reports, including the driver of the tractor-trailer.

According to Gwinnett County police, the interstate was shut down at the DeKalb County line. The southbound lanes reopened at approximately 10 a.m., the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The fire also closed portions of Crescent Drive and Dawson Boulevard and prompted police to evacuate drivers from their vehicles as well as businesses located on nearby access roads.

The fire is under control now, according to reports, but still appears to be smoldering.

All five northbound lines sustained damage from the fire and remain closed. It is likely lanes will be closed until crews can repave the damaged surfaces.

Surface streets are still heavily affected, the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center reported. Drivers are urged to use Buford Highway or Ga. 141, if possible.
