Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, and family reunions. With great food and family, there is much fun expected to follow while celebrating the Fourth of July. While you are event planning, don’t forget to develop a safety plan this holiday.

According to www.crimemapping.com, within the past few days there have been numerous reports of vehicle break-ins, motor vehicle thefts, larceny, and even a local leasing office on N. Druid Hills Rd. was the victim of burglary early this morning.

Listed below are some tips to help keep you and your home safe.

  1. Dial 9-1-1 to report a crime or any suspicious activity.
  2. Light up your residence. If you have the option, be sure to put timers on your lights.
  3. Lock all doors and windows.
  4. Protect your valuables! Keep valuables out of view and place them in a safe or lock box.
  5. Close your curtains and blinds.
  6. Hold the mail and/or newspaper delivery service.
  7. Don’t announce your departure via social media. Reserve the social media picture and status updates for your return!
  8. Shut off the main water valve to prevent any accidents while you are away from home.
  9. Get your lawn trimmed before you leave.
  10. Disconnect unnecessary electronics.
