IHM Students Participate in Daffodil Project - ADL Representative Attends
Immaculate Heart of Mary middle school students plant 500 daffodils to honor children who died during Holocaust.
(Atlanta, GA) During the week of January 27, the 8th grade students at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School (IHM) planted nearly 500 daffodils to create a daffodil garden outside the school. This garden is part of the Daffodil Project (www.daffodilproject.net) an organized program through Am Yisrael Chai, a nonprofit Holocaust Education and Awareness Organization. The Daffodil Project is trying to organize the planting of 1.5 million daffodils in memory of the children who died during the Holocaust. The daffodil flower was selected to represent the Jewish children because its shape resembles the yellow, six-sided star they wore to identify themselves as Jews during World War II. To date the project has organized the planting of over 187,000 plants. January 27, 2015 is significant because it was the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp.
On March 26 all of the IHM middle school students along with Erin Beacham, a representative from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) gathered for a prayer service in front of the now blooming daffodil garden. Kathleen Pyrce, Religion Teacher, and Carmen Graciaa, Director of Faith Formation, organized this project and the prayer service which included prayers and the No Place for Hate Resolution. During the service IHM students read biographies about actual Holocaust children. Additional biographies were placed in a time capsule and buried in the front of the garden.
Ms. Angela Walsh, School Counselor, works hard to bring enriching programs to the IHM students that teach respect, love and tolerance for all people. Programs such as the Daffodil Project help qualify the school for the much respected No Place for Hate title from the ADL. In fact, IHM has been named a No Place for Hate for four consecutive years.
