Lakeside Boys Dominated in 91-30 Loss to Miller Grove

The Vikings struggled Saturday against one of the nation's top-ranked high school basketball programs.

The boys basketball team was blitzed from the start Saturday, falling at home to one of the nation’s top prep basketball teams. Miller Grove coasted to a 91-30 victory behind a balanced scoring effort from its stars and bench players alike.

Miller Grove improved to 22-1 and 14-0 in Region 6-AAAA behind 14 points from Thomas Marshall, 13 from Tony Parker and 10 from Henry Brooks. But beyond the starters that reached double figures for the Wolverines, eight other players scored for Miller Grove, which is ranked No. 6 overall nationally in the latest USA Today prep poll.

With four players over 6-foot-5 and a big, physical corps of guards, Miller Grove easily outmanned a Lakeside team that has no players taller than 6-4.

Parker started off strong with three dunks early in the first quarter, helping the Wolverines to jump out to an insurmountable 26-4 lead after the opening period. Brooks and Morris, as well as Justin Colvin and Tony Evans, also got into the jam-fest as Miller Grove repeatedly converted uncontested fast breaks into emphatic slams.

Despite picking up two quick personal fouls, Parker, one of the country’s top junior forwards, was an immovable object down low for Miller Grove all game long.

Brothers Davante and Devon Provost also played big roles at the guard spots, scoring nine and five points, respectively, in the game.

Lakeside (5-18, 2-12) got tough play early from Angelo Cauley, who scored six first-half points to pace the Vikings. Cauley (who changed jerseys at halftime from his usual No. 21 to No. 50) finished with eight in the contest, but Devian Clark turned it on in the final quarter to give Lakeside a boost. Clark connected on three three-pointers in the fourth quarter alone to give him 13 in the game, all in the final period.

Lakeside employed a number of different lineup combinations, giving extended time to a number of different reserve guards including Austin Sanders, Jack Thomas and Derek Hardnett. But the Miller Grove backcourt stayed on top of the Lakeside ball-handlers from the tip, forcing a litany of turnovers and converting them into easy breakaway baskets.

Miller Grove’s Evans hit two end-of-quarter buzzer beaters, hitting on a long, running three-pointer right before the half to make it 53-10, and connecting on a high-banking lay-in to beat the third-quarter horn and push the Wolverine lead to 75-15.

Lakeside, which took down Marist on Friday night, 52-46, will travel to Carver-Atlanta on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip; the Vikings won the teams’ first meeting, 87-85, on Dec. 10. Miller Grove hosts Lithonia on Tuesday, also at 7.
