Students enrolled in Lakeside High School’s award-winning music programs will sell fresh citrus fruits from Florida Indian River Groves throughout the community beginning Sept. 27 to raise funds for the school’s band, orchestra and chorus programs. Orders will be taken through October, with delivery scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 3. Those interested may also place an order directly by emailing lakesidecitrus@gmail.com.

“We’re asking the community to support the Lakeside citrus sale again this year,” said David Guthrie, president of the Lakeside Band Association. “DeKalb County is extremely fortunate that Lakeside offers an outstanding music program under the direction of David Fairchild, whose own music career began when he was a student at Lakeside High School, as well as Thomas FitzStephens and Michael Giel. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits of arts education, especially music, in terms of enhanced learning abilities, greater comprehension of math and language and higher graduation rates.

The students also perform frequently for the public. In addition to halftime performances at Lakeside’s football games, the following concerts are scheduled: the Fall Choral Concert, Oct. 13; the Fall Orchestra Concert, Oct. 18; and the Fall Band Concert, Nov. 3. All will be held in Lakeside’s fine arts auditorium at 7 p.m. and are free to attend.”

Funds raised from the citrus sale help underwrite the free public concerts, and also are used for a variety of music department needs including new instruments, instrument repair, travel expenses, music costs, guest clinicians, group lessons and sectionals among other items. A fundraising program earlier this fall will support upcoming visits by Dr. Paul Bhasin, director of wind studies at Emory University, and Dr. Chester Phillips, associate director of bands at Georgia State University.
