St. Pius Advances to Second Round With Win Over Pickens County
Top-seeded Lady Golden Lions used tenacious defense to clinch victory at home
Emma Ucinski scored a team-high 12 points and Dylan Krause followed up with 10 as the top-seeded St. Pius Lady Golden Lions (24-5) defeated visiting No. 4 seed Pickens County (16-11), 52-44, Friday night in the first round of the Class AAA State Tournament.
St. Pius maintained control throughout the contest with a suffocating defense that guarded the rim like airport security personnel.
The Lady Golden Lions turned a 25-21 lead at intermission, into a 41-28 advantage at the end of the third quarter. From that moment on, the outcome of the game would never be in doubt as St. Pius cruised into victory lane.

With its win, St. Pius advances to the second round and welcomes the No. 3-seeded Troup Tigers (18-7) to its gymnasium Tuesday, March 1 at 7 p.m. Troup High School, which is located in LaGrange, earned a date with St. Pius after defeating No. 2 seed Walnut Grove, 51-45, Friday.
