St. Pius Boys, Girls Take State Championships

The girls soccer team won its third straight AAA state soccer championship, defeating Woodward Academy 4-0 Saturday; boys earn 5-4 win

For the third year in a row — and sixth time in school history — the girls hoisted the Georgia High School Association Class AAA soccer state championship trophy after defeating Woodward Academy 4-0, Saturday.

A player from each class netted a goal for St. Pius. Sophomore Tiffany Rodriguez opened scoring for the Golden Lions, then junior Diana Soloaga, senior Kelsey Keown and freshman Kaitlyn Orman followed.

“It’s a very diverse group of players,” said St. Pius head coach Sara Geiger of her championship team. “We have leaders all over the field that do their job and do it well.”

Geiger has led the team to three titles in her four years as head coach. In her first year at St. Pius, her team lost the Class AAAA finals in a shootout to Marist in 2008.

St. Pius finishes the season at 19-2-1 with the only losses coming to AAAA semifinalists Whitewater and Lambert. The tie occurred on March 14 versus AAAAA semifinalist Walton.
