Spring comes early here in the Deep South. We’ve already been dazzled by camellia displays, cup-shaped winter jasmine blossoms, and Lenten roses. The daffodils and crocuses are popping open. Fruit tree blossoms, dogwoods, and azaleas will strut their stuff soon.

And then comes the Yellow Scourge.

My home base, Atlanta, was once a dense pine forest. The trees still dominate our landscape, which is especially nice in winter because they keep lots of green up against blue skies. But every spring the pines drop their pollen and Atlanta streets, cars, patios, and sun porches wear a thick layer of yellow pine dust each day for about a month.

So even though our season may start earlier than it does in cooler climates, I usually wait to do my external spring-cleaning until after the Yellow Scourge has run its course. But while I’m waiting I clean up the interior of my home. And I clean up my websites, too.

Do you do a thorough job of spring-cleaning? When you do, be sure to include your business homes. Check these 5 areas to see if they need a good freshening.

Web Page Product and Service Descriptions

Take a good look at your “About” page and your bio. Have you added skills or expertise that isn’t reflected there? Or earned a new degree or certification?

Head Shot

Is yours more than 5 years old? If so, get a new one so your hairstyle, clothing and other styling, including eyeglasses, are current. When you look dated visitors get the subliminal message that you are behind the times in more than just your personal look.

Books

Have you added a book to your repertoire? Ebooks are a great way for you to establish your professional authority. Contact me if you’d like one ghostwritten to enhance your business credentials. My new ebook, “Write to Grow: Build Your Business, Get More Clients, Make More Money” will be available in early spring this year. My web designer is already working on adding it to the book page on my website. I’ll need to update the information on all of my social media platforms to contain information about it, too.

Verbiage

Does your language feel old-fashioned or out of style? Have a few colleagues give it a critical eye and make sure it speaks the lingo of the 20-teens.

Overall Feel

How does your site’s vibe strike you? If it looks like a room where the wallpaper is peeling from wear, or bears a color scheme popular in the 20th century give it a new look. Check out your competitors’ sites and get ideas for current color palettes, fonts, and effects. Make sure all your graphics are still relevant.

Spring forward into a whole new look or give your current one a tweak so you’re fresh and appealing for your visitors.
