Anonymous Tips Help Nab Alleged Debit-Card Thief in Peachtree Corners

Gwinnett Police said anonymous tips have led to the arrest of a woman wanted for transaction card fraud and the identification of her apparent boyfriend as an accomplice.

Leonor Ester Ohara, 40, of Peachtree Corners, was arrested and charged with two counts of FTC Fraud in connection with the theft of a debit card from a parked car on Poplar Spring Court in Peachtree Corners in late May.
Police said the card was used at three stores in the area: QuikTrip on Peachtree Corners Circle, CVS on Peachtree Parkway and McDonald’s on Jimmy Carter Boulevard. Camera surveillance images from QuikTrip showing the woman was distributed to the media on July 1.

“On Thursday, July 2, the lead investigator in this case received two anonymous tips based on the media coverage of the incident,” Gwinnett Police spokesperson Cpl. Michele Pihera said in an email.
Tipsters identified the woman as Leonor Ohara, police said.
Investigators learned that Ohara’s boyfriend, Michael Shane Smith, 37, may also be involved. On July 6 and 7, the lead investigator received surveillance footage from the McDonald’s and CVS incidents showing Smith using the stolen debit card.
Arrest warrants for FTC fraud and FTC fraud attempt have been obtained for Smith, who is still at-large.
