Police Spot Bear In Norcross Area: Video

Gwinnett County Police officers had a close encounter with the bear in a warehouse area over the weekend.

NORCROSS, GA — Some Gwinnett County Police officers were happy to let the subject of an investigation run away over the weekend.

In a video shared Tuesday by the sheriff's office, a group of police officers is seen watching as what appears to be a black bear makes its way through a warehouse area in Norcross.

At least one of the officers is holding a riot shield — just in case. Thankfully for the officers, the bear breaks into a run and appears headed toward a wooded area.

"I'm not chasing a bear!" one of the officers can be heard saying amid laughter.

The incident reportedly happened at OFS Fitel, a communications and fiber optics company near Jimmy Carter Boulevard and I-85.

On Facebook, the sheriff's office had some advice for the next time their law enforcement colleagues get too close for comfort with a bear.

"If only they'd had a pot of honey handy... ," the post reads.

According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, black bears in the state are typically found in the North Georgia mountains, along the Ocmulgee River drainage system in the central part of the state and in the Okefenokee Swamp in the southeast.

But they can range further in search of food, the DNR says. Young male bears also will roam large areas until they're able to establish their territory.

There are no recorded bear attacks on humans in Georgia, and no fatalities, the DNR says. There have only ever been two documented fatal black bear attacks in the Southeastern United States, according to the department.
