Berkeley Lake Teacher Honored At Concert

The award was handed out at Sunday Kind of Groove, a benefit for schools in the Duluth schools cluster.

BERKELEY LAKE, GA — A science teacher from Berkeley Lake Elementary School received an award recently for her outside-the-box teaching.

Kathy Bentley was awarded a Professional Development Award by the Duluth Cluster Schools Foundation at a benefit concert Sunday at Berkeley Lake.

Bentley is the science specialist at the school. For more than 20 years, she has headed up multiple outlets for students to get involved with and learn about the humanities, technology and the environment.

They include leading or working on the Green Team Club, Camp Invention, IT Girls Club, Gwinnett Clean And Beautiful and acting as the STEM academic team leader.

The award is funded by Scintel, a Duluth company and has been handed out annually since 2010 in honor of Dr. Savitri Chandrasekhar, Scintel CEO T.K. Ganesh's sister.

Chandrasekhar was a noted chemist and educator at the University of Toronto, known for her dedication to her students and her profession.

The Sunday Kind of Groove concert on Sunday was a benefit for DCSF. Concert-goers were able to pick teachers' wishes from an apple tree and donate to help supply classrooms for seven schools that qualify for Title I government funding.

The next DCSF Sunday Groove concert is scheduled for Sunday, August 20 and will feature big band/swing act ATLANTA 17, as well as performances from students from the Coleman STEAM School.
