Berkeley Lake Voters Approve Sunday Alcohol Sales

Small turnout OK'd permit for Sunday sales in the city.

Although just 20 percent of the 1,184 eligible voters turned out on Tuesday, the 's citizens approved City Council's recommendation to allow alcohol to be sold on Sundays.

In a statement posted on the city's website, it was announced that "The initial tabulation of votes indicates that 206 qualified electors voted "yes" and 34 qualified electors voted "no" on the question of whether to authorize the Berkeley Lake City Council to permit and regulate package sales by retailers."

The votes will have to be certified which could take up to three days but Deputy City Administrator Leigh Threadgill said she expects that the number posted on the website to be fairly close to the final count.

And should pending annexations go through as expected, Berkeley Lake will soon have at least one retailer who will be able to take advantage of the new law. The city has a number of annextions it will soon announce which will add to the size of this community of some 2,000 residents.
