Common people from Thirteen sovereign colonies... from many religious perspectives-Quaker, Calvinist, Methodist, Jewish, Baptist, Catholic... enlightened “by reason” our Founders produced a Constitution... a Bill of Rights... they created a republic … a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president..they accepted "Providence", God conceived as the power sustaining and guiding human destiny... even though "Providence" escaped their understanding- much as it does today- in spite of our vast knowledge of all things of "our" world...a central principle guided them... it was the concept of liberty... liberty that requires the active participation of the citizenry to protect and defend it against tyranny... thoughtful respect and awareness of human nature's proclivity to destroy that liberty... and what seems counter intuitive, the realization that submission to the law is essential to maintaining our liberty...it is what makes America different... so in the ebb and flow of history we find ourselves embroiled in debate...so no matter your view of America today... we must "act " or the complacency of the electorate will take our "liberties" from us... and we will devolve into anarchy.
If we cherish our freedom we must realize the importance of "our" participation in the election of those that represent us... this recognition of the importance of participatory rule leads me to urge you to become involved in the process... for my legacy is my children and grandchildren...and while their experience will be different from my own... their liberty must be preserved by those who have the perspective and wisdom...by those who dare to live "free", but submit themselves to the rule of law... no one can fully understand "their" role as an American... our history is unique...our individual sacrifice and the sacrifice of others often goes unnoticed- unknown...but ultimately it is an act of submission to something greater than one's self that makes us free... it is an awesome responsibility we must accept... so I encourage you to take your civic duty seriously and become engaged and aware as we begin the process of choosing our next Senator.
