BURGLARY PREVENTION TIPS FROM THE WEST PRECINCT

Burglars use many tactics to look for a targeted home. A burglar will go to the front door to see if anyone is home. If a resident answers the door the burglar will make up some story about why they are there. If no one answers, the burglar may immediately break in or he may leave briefly and return to force open a side or back door.

Here are some tips to protect yourself and your property from break-ins:

If a stranger comes to your door and you are reluctant to open it, make noise or speak through the door so he knows someone is home.

Make sure you are using your house alarm even when you are home, and have an alarm sign in the front of the house.

Keep your garage doors closed even when you're home.

Be vigilant for any unfamiliar people and vehicles and call police if necessary.

Keep bushes and hedges trimmed below windows, and keep tree limbs cut above windows for natural surveillance.

Keep entry exit doors lit at night. Motion-detector lights are a great tool to have around your residence.

The Gwinnett County Crime Prevention Unit will conduct a residential security survey at your home at your request. Feel free to contact Officer Shane Kelly #660 at the West Precinct to set up an appointment at
678-442-6572.
