Greyson Ferrell, 19, was sentenced to at least 7 years in prison for the 2015 shooting of a Cornelius Police Officer.

CORNELIUS, NC -- More than two years after he was arrested for shooting a police officer responding to a domestic violence call at his home, a Cornelius teenager has been sentenced to serve at least seven years in prison.

Greyson Ferrell, 19, was sentenced Sept. 11 by Superior Court Judge W. Todd Pomeroy for the assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious injury for the May 2015 shooting of Cornelius police officer Lt. James Quattlebaum.

Quattlebaum, along with Officer Jeffery Heinz, were speaking with people at Ferrell’s home when the then 16 year-old came down the stairs wearing a bulletproof vest and shot Quattlebaum in the abdomen. Heinz returned fire, striking Quattlebaum in the vest and knocking him to the floor.

Quattlebaum was wearing a bulletproof vest, but he sustained serious injuries. In a statement this week, the Cornelius Police Department said he had fully recovered and was grateful for the support he received from his family, the police department and community. “As Lt. Quattlebaum stated in court yesterday, ‘We will never forget what happened, but I forgive Greyson,’” the statement said.
