Drunk Uncle Found Guilty of Molesting Great-Niece

A Gwinnett County jury found a local man guilty of molesting his pre-teen great-niece during a week of drunkenness in 2013.

Jerome McMurtry, who was convicted this week of two counts of child molestation and sexual battery this week, testified during the trial that he was β€œintoxicated during the nights in question” the district attorney’s office said in a statement.

McMurtry, of Duluth, was arrested on Dec. 13, 2013 after the great-niece, who was 10 at the time, said he touched her inappropriately several times. Patch reported the girl also told police he also showed her his genitals.

The district attorney’s office said there were several occurrences of inappropriate touching during a week period. McMurtry took the stand during the trial and admitted to being under the influence, the office said.

Sentencing is expected Monday, May 11.

Assistant District Attorney Michael DiOrio presented the case to the court.
