Girl Scout Gold Award Diaper Drive

I am currently working on my Gold Award. My project is about the need and lack of diapers. If you are willing to hold a drive, let me know!

My name is Grettie Reifenberger and I am a Senior Girl Scout. I am currently working on my Gold Award, which is the highest award in Girl Scouts (equivalent to Boy Scout’s Eagle rank). My project involves raising awareness regarding the lack of diapers in low income communities, and the effect that this has on the children. I am in the final report stage of my project and am informing you on this need.

Why- Diapers are not covered by SNAP or WIC, the federal government calls them a luxury item not a necessary supply. A year supply of diapers is roughly $936, based on $72 per month. For a full-time working parent earning minimum this 6% of their gross income. While 6% doesn't seem like a large portion but it is when added up with all the other expenses: water, heat, electrically, rent, food and child care, it is a lot of money that most families in low-income situations and poverty can't afford to spend. About 30% of mothers can’t afford diapers for their children. They might try to clean the diaper and reuse it. Trying to reuse soiled diapers generates a huge health risk. This health risk is diaper rash, which untreated diaper rash can turn into infantigo (impetigo), a contagious skin rash common in children that needs to be treated with antibiotics and topicals. Thus, meaning a trip to the doctors and more money not spent on food or other necessities

If you are interested in holding an annual diaper drive, please let me know by September 3rd!
