Gwinnett Schools Approve Redistricting Plan With Modifications

The Gwinnett County School Board approved its system redistricting plan Thursday and included some modifications to help ease parents’ concerned over the changes.

The school system is redistricting to accommodate the opening of four new schools in 2015, including a new high school cluster in the area directly south of Ga. 316 near Lawrenceville.

Existing clusters impacted are Berkmar, Central Gwinnett, Meadowcreek, Norcross, Brookwood and Peachtree Ridge.

The board approved the latest version of the map, with the following modifications (as posted on the GCPS website):

• Students who reside on Yankton Drive currently attend schools in the Brookwood Cluster and will now attend schools in the new Berkmar/Central Gwinnett relief cluster. The district will allow permissive transfers for current residents in this area to remain at their current schools.
• The area in the new Berkmar/Central Gwinnett relief cluster that is referred to as “Section 15” will remain in the new cluster. However, the district will allow permissive transfers for current residents in this area to remain at their current schools (Gwin Oaks Elementary, Five Forks Middle, and Brookwood High). Residents choosing this option will follow GCPS’ permissive transfer process.
• In the Norcross Cluster, the Board is approving the map that was posted on December 15. In order to enhance the relief to Peachtree Elementary, Simpson Elementary will allow permissive transfers until a relief elementary school for the Norcross Cluster opens or until Simpson reaches a maximum enrollment. Again, residents choosing this option will follow GCPS’ permissive transfer process.
