Jobless Rate in Peachtree Corners Rose in May (ICYMI)

The unemployment rate in Peachtree Corners rose in May, according to data released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor.

The rate in the city climbed four-tenths of a percentage point to 3.3 percent last month, up from 2.9 in April. The rate in May 2014 was 3.7, the data showed.

Still, Peachtree Corners remained second among Georgia cities with populations of 25,000 or more (Brookhaven was first with a rate of 2.9 percent)

In Gwinnett, the rate jumped from 5.0 in April to 5.4 last month. The rate was 6.2 last year.

Rates for other Gwinnett cities with populations over 25,000: Duluth, 5.9 percent (up from 5.8 in April); and Lawrenceville, 7.0 (6.4).

The labor department said metro Atlanta’s rate was up three-tenths of a point in May -- 5.9, up from 5.6 in April, but considerably less than May 2014 (6.9).

The rate rose as the labor force grew by 23,594 to 2,831,311, and while the new entrants are searching for work, they are counted as unemployed, the agency said.

Metro Gainesville had the lowest area jobless rate at 5.1 percent, while the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest at 7.7 percent.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for May was 6.3 percent, up from a revised 6.2 percent in April. It was 7.3 percent in May 2014.
