New Sidewalks Coming To West Gwinnett County

The new sidewalks will be built along Buford Highway and Winters Chapel Road, after commissioners approved their funding.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — More sidewalks are coming to west Gwinnett County.

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners has approved sidewalk projects on Buford Highway and Winters Chapel Road. The Buford Highway sidewalk will run from Langford Road to Simpson Circle and the Winters Chapel work will be from Newton Drive to Spalding Drive.

"These sidewalks are being added to high-traffic areas for pedestrians and will serve the residential areas along Winters Chapel Road as well as provide walking access to the commercial areas along Buford Highway," said District 2 Commissioner Lynette Howard.

The Buford Highway sidewalks will stretch about 1.2 miles along the south side of Buford Highway and will be built by Peach State Construction Co. LLC — the low bidder with a proposal just over $1 million. The Georgia Department of Transportation will fund 67 percent of this contract, with the remainder funded by Gwinnett’s 2009 special-purpose, local option sales tax.

The Winters Chapel Road sidewalk is just under a half-mile in length and will be installed on the east side of the road. At $807,248, CMES Inc. was the lowest of five bidders. Construction for this one will be funded by the 2014 SPLOST Program.
