Crews were able to isolate the carbon monoxide leak that forced the evacuation of more than 100 guests and employees from a Peachtree Corners hotel Monday evening, but they weren’t able to pinpoint the source.
Gwinnett firefighters were at the Hilton Atlanta Northeast until almost 10 p.m., when the building was turned back over to motel management. Earlier in the evening, around 125 people were evacuated, including seven employees who were evaluated for exposure and released by paramedics.

“ The Fire Inspector determined it to be safe for guest and staff to re-enter the building, so long as, the boilers were shut down and the gas was shut off to the building,” Gwinnett Fire spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said in an 11 p.m. email. “Management was working with guests who wished to make other lodging arrangements for the night.”
Rutledge said several “potential sources” for the leak were identified, but further investigation was needed before the hotel can return to normal operations.
More from Gwinnett Fire:
Hazmat personnel from the fire department worked closely with building maintenance engineers and Atlanta Gas Light representatives to control the situation and ventilate the area. The seven people that were evaluated by paramedics and released at the scene were all employees at the hotel. Each complained of similar symptoms after being exposed to the CO. Firefighters picked-up elevated CO readings in the basement, ballroom, and executive office areas of the building on the main-level. They did not have elevated readings on the upper floors or in guest corridors.
