If you’ve recently traveled northbound where Peachtree Parkway and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard split, you’ve undoubtedly noticed the lights and holiday decorations on the Peachtree Corners’ Paul Duke Parkway gateway sign.

It’s the first time the stone-based sign, which was erected in 2008, has been lighted. Earlier this year, the United Peachtree Corners Civic Association (UPCCA) which had the sign built, worked with Georgia Power to have electricity run to the sign so lights could be added.

The monument sign was built with combined funds raised by the UPCCA and grant money from the state. The UPCCA also raised the funds for the lighting project.

“The lighting was completely funded by UPCCA through donations from residents and businesses,” said Debbie Mason, who headed the Peachtree Parkway Improvement Project, a UPCCA committee that also took on the task of landscaping and maintaining the Peachtree Parkway. “My goal was to make sure we had power for holiday lighting.”

Shortly before the Thanksgiving holiday, the City’s public works department, added lights, green garland, two wreaths and three big red bows. And adjacent to the sign is a holiday tree topped with a star. Both the sign and the tree will light up each evening through the holidays.

“It’s great to have the Peachtree Corners gateway sign lighted at last,” said Mayor Mike Mason. “And soon it will have permanent lights and new landscaping which will further enhance the sign.”

UPCCA member Gay Shook, who spearheaded the effort in 2007 to raise the $40,000 needed
for the cost of the gateway sign, was thrilled to learn of the addition of the decorations and
lights.

“This is wonderful,” said Shook. “What a nice feature to have the gateway sign lighted and decorated for the holidays.”
