I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. This year, I am thankful for so much! My family and friends, all the blessings in my life. But I am especially thankful for our wonderful city, Peachtree Corners. Because the city was able to financially assist with the purchase of Simpsonwood, this treasure has been saved. You can read about it here. If we had not incorporated, it is probable that Simpsonwood would have been developed. Simpsonwood will be maintained as a passive park.

City Council Meeting –November 18 – Recap

Find out what's happening in Peachtree Cornersfor free with the latest updates from Patch.

  • Public hearing for rezoning request for Oglethorpe, 20 single family homes at the corner of Spalding Terrace and Spalding Drive across from Norcross High. Change from R-100 to R-60. This was approved with additional conditions designed to address homeowner concerns. You can see the application and original conditions in the packet here.
  • To address concerns about traffic and safety, the developer agreed to widen Spalding Terrace alongside the new development and add a sidewalk. An additional traffic study will be required once the development is nearing completion. The mayor also asked staff to review the street to see if the city could take additional steps in terms of widening the street, adding sidewalks and a turn lane.
  • Resolutions to reappoint members of the Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals whose terms are expiring were tabled.
  • The LMIG sidewalk design contract was approved as were the IGA agreements for road projects.
  • Discussion on Business Incubators by the Gwinnett Chamber. The incubators provide support for tech startup companies. There is an opportunity to create an incubator in Tech Park. There will be updates in the future on this issue.
  • Update on Code Enforcement. See the attached presentation on code enforcement. We were concerned about the increase in the length of time it is taking to respond to citizen request. Plus, we lost a code compliance officer to Lawrenceville recently. Council has requested a proposal from CH2M Hill to increase the number of officers until we can catch up on requests.
  • Update on Solid Waste. The bills for next year have gone out. We have a significant number of non-paying customers. Plus there is significant overhead to the city of collecting the trash payments. The city does require that all households participate in the city’s trash collection service. It allows for our low cost because our haulers do not have to pick and choose the homes to collect from. Because of all of these issues, the city will work with the county and place the trash fees for basic service on the property tax bills for 2016. That will allow us to continue to provide this service at a very low cost to our residents.
  • Update on Road Maintenance. Greg Ramsey, our new Public Works Director, gave us an update on road maintenance. Our crew took over maintenance from the county on 11-1. They are beginning to work through a backlog of requests for right of way maintenance and clean up. See the attached presentation of before and after pictures. I think you will be amazed at the changes. This is only the beginning. We should see even more great changes by our next meeting.
