Peachtree Corners Traffic: DOT Postpones Closure of Jimmy Carter Bridge

The Gwinnett DOT originally planned to close the bridge Nov. 14-17 for work on the diverging diamond interchange crossover at I-85.

Peachtree Corners motorists who access Interstate 85 from Jimmy Carter Boulevard will get a break next week with the postponement of a planned road closing.

The Gwinnett County Department of Transportation said in a news release it has postponed the closure of the Jimmy Carter Boulevard bridge at I-85 that was originally scheduled Nov. 14-17 for work on the diverging diamond interchange crossover.

The DOT said additional work must be completed first.

The additional work includes the installation of the bridge side barrier and truss system, raised concrete medians and interchange lighting as well as paving on the Jimmy Carter Boulevard approaches to the bridge. Performing this work prior to crossover will create fewer traffic disruptions once the final lane configuration is completed.

Additional work will also be completed to widen the I-85 northbound on-ramp. The ramp widening, combined with the Georgia Department of Transportation‘s current widening on northbound I-85 between Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Indian Trial Road, will provide a new “flex lane.” These improvements will enhance the operation of the DDI during the afternoon rush hour by allowing traffic to flow more smoothly onto northbound I-85.
