Peachtree Corners Wins Prestigious Engineering Award

The award is for an innovative, laser-assisted system the city uses for inventorying assets.

PEACHTREE CORNERS, GA — Just four-and-a-half years old, the city of Peachtree Corners has been named the winner of the prestigious Georgia Engineering Excellence Award.

The award comes from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia.

The city and CH2M, an operations partner with the city, received the 2017 state award for their Geospatial Asset Inventory Program in the category "Studies, Research and Consulting Engineering Services."

The program with the big name uses photo imaging and LIDAR — surveying technology that measures distances by illuminating targets with laser lights. Together, the two are used to compile a comprehensive catalog of assets in the city.

The catalog helps the city refine and focus its management strategy.

Although this sort of technology has been used to produce aerial views for years, no other jurisdiction in Georgia had used it from the ground level.

"I am extremely proud the city and CH2M are being recognized by ACEC Georgia for our asset inventory project,” said Greg Ramsey, director of Public Works in Peachtree Corners. "The city now has a complete inventory of infrastructure items. Over 35,000 assets were captured in rights-of-way, which was more than double what the city had documented previously."

The award will be presented on February 25 by ACEC Georgia at an event held at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

Founded in 1956, ACEC is a national federation of 52 state and regional organizations and is headquartered in Washington, DC.
