Philanthropy Group Moves To Peachtree Corners

Assistance League of Atlanta provides aid, including school clothes, to needy children and adults in the metro area.

PEACHTREE CORNERS, GA — A group designed to help children and adults in need is now calling Peachtree Corners its home.

Assistance League of Atlanta, which has 270 volunteers serving a network of community partners throughout the metro area, recently had a ribbon-cutting at its new offices at 6264 Crooked Creek Rd.

The league moved its headquarters to the 16,000 square-foot center after outgrowing its old spot in Chamblee — a location which it shared with a thrift shop. It will still have operations out of that location, said Paula Smiley, Assistance League of Atlanta's vice president of communications.

"The Assistance League is a testament to the impact that volunteers can have in our community," said Mayor Mike Mason during Monday’s ribbon-cutting event. "The organization is well known for its benevolent contributions, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to welcome Assistance League of Atlanta to our city."

First established in California in 1918 by the philanthropic efforts of two women, the organization now has 120 chapters throughout the United States, with over 23,000 volunteer members. The Atlanta chapter was formed in 1982 by a group of 34 women who founded the Atlanta chapter in Chamblee. The local chapter operates with no paid employees.

The organization operates eight different programs, including Operation School Bell, its signature national program which provides new clothing, uniforms, jackets, hygiene kits and other items to students in the metro area.

Elementary and middle school students are selected by school social workers and the items are picked up by social workers or delivered to the school systems. In addition, Assistance League of Atlanta offers need-based scholarships for students pursuing post-secondary education.
