GBI: Gwinnett Officers Killed Man, 72, Who Attacked with Knife
The police-involved shooting happened Thursday morning during a response to a suicide threat.

The GBI is investigating a police-involved shooting Thursday morning that killed a Gwinnett man who allegedly attacked officers with a knife.
The agency said two Gwinnett Police officers were involved in the shooting, which killed Joseph Roy, 72, around 11 a.m. on Avalon Court in unincorporated Lawrenceville.
The GBI said in a news release that the officers initially responded to a 911 call at 10:44 a.m. Thursday about a suicide threat. Roy had reportedly barricaded himself in a bathroom, and when the officers approached the door, he allegedly opened the door, threatened the officers and charged them with a knife, βcoming within 5 feet of the officers,β the GBI said.

The officers fired three shots at Roy, who died at a local hospital.
No other information was released.

βThe GBI will conduct a thorough investigation to determine what occurred during the incident,β the agency stated. βWhen the investigation is completed it will be turned over to District Attorney Danny Porter for any action he deems appropriate.β
