President’s Day - We Can Do Better

As we celebrate President's Day, men and women represent us at every level of government. The door to our democracy is open to all. We can do better to create the necessary environment for women to thrive and succeed.

Today we celebrate President’s Day, and honor their many accomplishments.

In the name of all the Presidents that stood for us and before us, for the causes of our grandmothers, mothers, sisters and grand-daughters who made America immense and great – celebrate and rejoice with me today!

And think about a few things with me, too.

In Georgia, we do not have a single statewide female office holder. Neither of our Senators, nor any of 14 Congressional seats are held by women. The Georgia General Assembly has 23 percent female representation, while women make up 51 percent of the population.

To be more specific, the State of Georgia has:

  • 8 women out of 56 senators
  • 45 women House members out of 180
  • 38.4 percent women hold managerial jobs
  • Zero female leadership in statewide offices
  • Zero female in the Congressional seats

Studies show that more women are achieving higher education. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in the State of Georgia, 35.6 percent women between the ages of 25-34 are graduating from colleges, compared to 27.8 percent men, yet,

  • Maternal morbidity is the second highest in the nation
  • 21 percent of women live in poverty
  • Over 300,000 women do not have health insurance
  • Women make $7000 less in annual wages than their counterparts
  • Women have taken much longer to recover from recession

We can do better.

In honor of our Presidents, the mothers who gave them life and the wives who supported them, the great women who came before us and stood for us, we must do better. Let us create that necessary environment for women to thrive and succeed.

I am running for public office from District 95. Together, we can create a better future for generations to come. On this President’s Day, stand by me and help me raise our numbers.
