School Board Expected to Vote on Redistricting Plan

Gwinnett County Board of Education will hear more public opinion on the system’s redistricting plan before it’s expected to vote on it Thursday, Dec. 18 at its 7 p.m. meeting.

The plan, parts of which were updated Monday, Dec. 15, will impact 31 schools and involve more than 13,000 students, including Peachtree and Simpson elementary schools in Peachtree Corners.

Under the plan, students from two areas off Spalding Drive who attend Peachtree ES will move to Simpson. The schools would remain in the Norcross High School Cluster.

The school system is going through the restricting process to accommodate the opening of four new schools in 2015, including a new high school cluster in the area directly south of Ga. 316 near Lawrenceville.

Existing clusters impacted are Berkmar, Central Gwinnett, Meadowcreek, Norcross, Brookwood and Peachtree Ridge, the school system said in a press release.

Thursday’s public input is scheduled 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18. The Board is expected to vote on the plan afterward.

According to a news item posted on the GCPS website:

Gwinnett County Public Schools uses an inclusive redistricting process that allows the school system to gather input from educators, parents, and community members on the proposed revisions. The redistricting process begins with the development of proposed maps that use set school system criteria. These criteria include looking at current enrollment, enrollment forecasts, enrollment histories, existing identifiable boundaries, school locations, and student transportation. The proposed map for this specific redistricting is found below. All input through the Boundary Input Forms was submitted on Nov. 3. Refer to the Redistricting Timeline [see below] for other important dates.
