STEAM Lesson Leads Wesleyan Physics Students to the Pool

Wesleyan junior and senior physics put their boat building skills to the test.

A creative STEAM lesson led physics students to Wesleyan School’s natatorium today.

About fifty junior and senior students from three general physics classes demonstrated what they’ve learned about buoyancy and Archimedes Principle during boat races this afternoon.

The students were divided in groups of four or five and given about three weeks to construct a boat using only cardboard and duct tape. Today they brought their creations to the on-campus natatorium, climbed in, and raced down the pool and back while first grade students cheered them on.

Following the races, seniors explained to the first graders more about the project. The lesson is part of Wesleyan’s commitment to creating hands-on, creative learning opportunities for students.
