Suspected Hit-and-Run Driver Dies After Pulled from Burning Bentley

Gwinnett Police said the driver hit a parked car at Malibu Grand Prix; they believe alcohol played a role in the fatality.

A suspected hit-and-run driver is dead after Gwinnett Police found a car on fire in the parking lot of Malibu Grand Prix in Norcross early Saturday morning.

Officers pulled Alfred Grooms, 37, of Norcross, out of his burning 2006 Bentley Continental but he died at the scene, police said in a news release.

Police responded to a hit-and-run call in the area of Jimmy Carter Boulevard and I-85 around 3 a.m. A short time later, an officer saw the Bentley being driven erratically in the area of JCB and Brook Hollow Parkway, heading away from the hit-and-run scene.

The officer attempted to give chase, but lost contact with the vehicle.

Soon after that, the officer saw the car on fire in the Malibu Grand Prix parking lot. It had struck a parked car and ignited, police said.

Several officers then pulled Grooms from the burning vehicle.

Alcohol is believed to have played a role in the incident, police said.
