Tennis is the Name of the Game for these Peachtree Corners Women
ALTA tennis rules in the metro Atlanta area. The women on this Peachtree Station team gathered recently to enjoy a challenging match and some good food.
Editor's note: ALTA tennis is big in this corner of Gwinnett County. Our roving photographer caught up with one of the teams playing a morning match recently and they graciously allowed us to capture some of their matches.
Talking to the women of the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association (ALTA) soon uncovered some interesting and non-written facts about this local chapter of the association. Itβs true, all the members share a love of the sport and camaraderie that extends through the years. Some players have been involved with ALTA for upwards of 20 years and I even found one team who have been tennis mates for 31 years.
Although I graciously declined to partake in their snacks, I was impressed with the extent to which some of the teams presented their delectable dishes. It was way more than chips and dip!

Climb into the Wayback Machine and letβs set the dial for 1934. Weβll discover that was ALTAβs official registration date with the United States Lawn Tennis Association. The intention was to promote tennis tournaments and junior tennis development in the Atlanta area.
Fast forward to 1971 when with less than 1,000 members ALTA started league play. By 1975 the association had grown to approximately 10,000 active members and from that point on, the numbers grew to 35,000 in 1982, to the plus side of 51,000 in just six more years. When we rang in the New Year of 1992, ALTA had well over 70,000.

The Alanta Lawn Tennis Association has fledged from a small group of volunteers to an estimated 100,000 fun loving, tennis playing people enjoying one of the best forms of exercise, into a large non-profit corporation licensed by the State of Georgia and recognized by tennis players around the world.
