A Gwinnett County man killed one would-be robber and shot at least one other late Monday night in an attempted home invasion.

The incident happened just before midnight at the Valencia Apartments on Springs Lane in Peachtree Corners.

The man told police he armed himself after he saw three to five males from the back patio of his ground-floor apartment. After doing so, he told police he answered a knock at the door and saw three males in the breezeway asking him to come outside, but he declined.

“According to the victim, as he was attempting to shut the door, the suspects pushed the door open,” Gwinnett Police Cpl. Michele Pihera said in a news release. “The victim fired his gun striking at least two of the suspects.”

Pihera said a woman and infant were inside the home when the incident occurred.

One of the suspects was shot in the chest and died later at a local hospital. His identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Another suspect was hit in the arm. He showed up at Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth for treatment. Pihera said the suspect was detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning.

“According to the victim, another suspect was seen limping away from the home, but he couldn’t confirm if that suspect was struck by a bullet or was limping due to an injury,” Pihera said.

Pihera said K-9 dog tracked a trail of blood to a nearby apartment, but no one was there when police searched the unit. Evidence related to the attempted robbery was collected from that apartment.

The other suspects fled on foot, and their identities and location were not immediately known.
