Weather Alert: Code Orange Air Alert; Heat Indices of 100 or More

Metro Atlanta is under a Code Orange air quality alert for what is expected to be a steamy Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

High temperatures in the mid-90s and heat indices that could reach 100 degrees or more, along with rising ozone concentrations, will make air-conditioning a must-have for many on Monday.

Code Orange means air quality could be unhealthy for sensitive groups, especially in the late afternoon and early afternoon, when ozone concentrations are at their highest.

The alert area includes Peachtree Corners and Gwinnett County.

CODE ORANGE AIR QUALITY ALERT IS IN EFFECT FOR ATLANTA FOR MONDAY JULY 20

THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES...ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION DIVISION HAS ISSUED A CODE ORANGE (UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS) AIR QUALITY ALERT FOR ATLANTA FOR MONDAY JULY 20.

UNDER CODE ORANGE CONDITIONS THE OUTDOOR AIR IS LIKELY TO BE UNHEALTHY FOR SOME PEOPLE. CHILDREN, PEOPLE WHO ARE SENSITIVE TO OZONE, AND PEOPLE WITH HEART OR LUNG DISEASE SHOULD LIMIT PROLONGED OUTDOOR EXERTION DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON OR EARLY EVENING WHEN OZONE CONCENTRATIONS ARE HIGHEST.

This is the second air quality alert of the summer for metro Atlanta.

A Heat Advisory for heat indices over 105 degrees has been issued for South Georgia Monday, but it will be still very hot in metro Atlanta (see attached graphic). Take precautions to guard against complications from the heat during the hottest part of the day 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., the weather service said.
