'White House Down' Genuinely Entertaining Says One Critic

Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx team up in this action film.

The premise, courtesy ofΒ the film's official website:

In Columbia Pictures' 'White House Down,' Capitol Policeman John Cale (ChanningΒ Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (JamieFoxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation's government falling into chaos and time running out, it's up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.Β

Here's what critics are saying:

... 'White House Down'Β revels in its silly nonsense and succeeds in turningΒ ChanningΒ Tatum into Hollywood’s newest action hero. ...Β since he and JamieΒ FoxxΒ have great chemistry, 'White House Down' is filled with enough humor and action to fit the bill as Roland Emmerich’s best movie since 'Independence Day.' β€”Β ScottΒ Mantz, Access HollywoodΒ

Tatum looks every inch the action hero, but he's got nothing to play.Β FoxxΒ doesn't look remotely presidential, and phones in what is laughably being called a performance. Worse is the shameless product placement. At one point theΒ PrezΒ says he won't leave the White House without hisΒ Jordans. He actually stops the movie to put them on, and those kicks are really ready for their closeup. β€”Β
Peter Travers, Rolling StoneΒ
...Β
what makesΒ White House DownΒ not just tolerable but frivolously entertainingΒ is its slapstick soul; a scene where the presidential limousine does doughnuts on the South Lawn plays like an homage to the KeystoneΒ Kops. β€”Β Mary Pols, Time EntertainmentΒ

'White House Down'Β is a hoot and a half, a shameless popcorn entertainment that is preposterous and diverting in just about equal measure. ...Β Helping add verisimilitude are the actors, especially Tatum andΒ Foxx. They end up as a very unlikely buddy team able to share laughs β€” as well as armaments.Β β€”KennethΒ Turan, Los Angeles Times

White House DownΒ is aΒ pretty solid action-adventure picture that delivers exactly what it promises and does so with high style. It’s big-scale, full of fun dialogue and genuinely entertaining character turns by a crop of terrific performers. β€”Β ScottΒ Mendelson, ForbesΒ

"White House Down" is ratedΒ PG-13 for prolonged sequences of action and violence including intense gunfire and explosions, some language and a brief sexual image. The movieΒ runs 2 hour and 17 minutes.Β
