Davis, Bennett Advance To Special Election Runoff
The two men are vying to represent State House District 80, which covers Brookhaven and portions of Sandy Springs and Chamblee.

Preliminary election results show former Brookhaven Mayor J. Max Davis and fellow candidate Taylor J. Bennett are the top two finishers in Tuesday’s special election to fill the House District 80 seat.

As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, results from the Georgia Secretary of State’s website show Bennett, who ran as a Democrat, leading the pack with 1,472 votes, or 36.84 percent. Davis, who is a Republican, follows with 1,259 votes, or 31.51 percent.
Trailing the four-way race are Republicans Catherine Bernard at 30 percent, or 1,202 votes, and Loren Collins at 1.58 percent, 63, votes.

The seat became vacant when former State Rep. Mike Jacobs accepted an appointment by Gov. Nathan Deal to serve on the DeKalb County State Court bench.
Davis served as Brookhaven’s first mayor until he resigned to run for the seat. Bennett is a Brookhaven attorney at the Bennett Law Group.
Davis and Bennett will face off in a special election runoff scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 11.
