Exhibit Gives Glimpse of Sandy Springs' Upcoming Playable Art Park

An exhibit at Abernathy Arts Center includes models, sketches and more from artists whose sculptures were selected for Abernathy Greenway Linear Park.

 

A new exhibit opens this week to give residents a sense of the upcoming Playable Art Park at Abernathy Greenway Linear Park

Folks can see models, artists’ sketches and notes in the six-week showing at the Abernathy Arts Center. An opening reception for “Maquettes, Models and Sketches: Public Art as Process,” will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Friday.

The exhibit will then be open during normal gallery hours: 9 a.m. -7 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday; 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday.

when it opens later this year. More than 120 entries were submitted by international artists before six winners were named.

The playable art includes “Twist and Shout,” a 40-foot climbable stainless steel free-play fixture; “Dragonfly,” a 60-foot sculpture with a dragon face and porthole eyes, climbing rope wings and slide; and “The Big Imagine,” a 65-foot long, 17-foot high swing set with 14 structural steel arches.
