Fatal Head-On Crash Under Investigation In Sandy Springs

A preliminary report indicates a Ford Focus traveling south on Lake Forrest Drive crossed the center line and struck a Mercedes.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Members of the Sandy Springs Police Department's Traffic Unit continue to investigate a two-vehicle accident that killed a motorist near the city's border with Atlanta.

An officer was dispatched to the scene of the crash around 9:30 p.m. Jan. 15 in the 4600 block of Lake Forrest Drive.

A preliminary report indicates a blue 2005 Ford Focus driven by Nelson Bautista-Martinez was traveling southbound on Lake Forrest Drive near Barbara Lane when "it went left of center" and collided head-on with a black 2002 Mercedes S430, an incident report states.

Bautista-Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene while the man and woman in the Mercedes were transported to North Fulton Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Sandy Springs police on Thursday, Jan. 26 closed a segment of Lake Forrest Drive between Long Island Drive and Barbara Lane as part of the investigation into the fatal crash, the city said on its Facebook page.

Sandy Springs police spokesperson Sgt. Forrest Bohannon said the investigation remains active and any additional information on possible contributing factors to the crash could take some time to unearth by the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office.
