Five inducted into HIES Wall of Fame

Five of Holy Innocents’ all-time best athletes/coaches were inducted into the Wall of Fame Friday night, Sept. 23rd during halftime of the HIES-Wesleyan football game. The Wall of Fame was established in 2008; it recognizes and honors outstanding varsity athletes, coaches, and/or contributors who have demonstrated excellence in their athletic pursuits.

The five inductees included Daniel Blaustein (2008), Jamie Fleming (’96), Morgan Fleming (’98) and coaches Ron Green and Lucie Bornholm.

At the ceremony, each received a commemorative plaque - a replica of the one displayed on the Wall of Fame in the Main Gym - as well as a “free ticket for life” to any HIES sporting event.

Below is a brief bio of each inductee:

Daniel Blaustein – ( Class of 2008 – baseball)

Daniel was a three-year starting second baseman and relief pitcher for the varsity baseball program, where he helped lead HI to the Final Four as a sophomore, Class AA State Champions as a junior and quarterfinals his last year. As a senior captain, he was awarded the Matt Molen award and named AJC First Team All-State. He still ranks #6 on the all-time list for RBI’s in a career and top 10 for career batting average. In the classroom, Daniel was inducted into the National Honor Society and awarded the University of Georgia Certificate of Merit, Certificate of Honorable Merit – Magna Cum Laude, for National Latin Examination, College Board AP Scholar Award, Mu Alpha Theta and Scholar Athlete Award He went on to play at Georgia State University, where he was named a two-time academic all-district student/athlete, held a position on Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and earned honors for community service and mentorship programs. On the field, he started in 34 of his 110 games, had 46 hits, scored 31 runs, drove in 27 and had two homers.

Jamie Fleming (Class of 1996 - Swimming).

Jamie started at HIES in 7th grade and was the Valedictorian of the second graduating class in 1996. She received the Academic Award for having the highest GPA in almost every class, and also earned awards for leadership, scholastics, sportsmanship and was on Honor Roll all four years. In swimming, she was a part of the 200-meter relay team that finished fourth-in-state in 1996. She also helped HI take first in Class A, and eleventh in a field of 122 schools at state in 1998 against powerhouses such as Westminster, Chattahoochee, Parkview, Lovett, and Pace. She was the school’s first Academic All American. Jamie later attended Duke University, graduating cum laude in 2000 and earning four varsity letters in swimming. From 1998 to 2000, she was a member of a four, women record-setting medley relay teams, was a member of the ACC Honor Roll all four years of college, and captain of the Women’s Swim Team her senior year. She won the Coaches Award in 1997, and the MVP Award in 2000. Jamie continued her studies in Veterinary Medicine at Georgia, specializing in Small Animal Internal Medicine. She is now a veterinarian in Milwaukee; she married Tyler Klose - also a veterinarian.

Morgan Fleming (Class of 1998 - Swimming).

Morgan attended HI from 6th through 12th grade, graduating in 1998. She excelled academically, making honor roll all-four years in high school while also being a member of the National Honor Society, and a Peer Leader. She was on the Swim Team from 1994-1998, where she was chosen MVP in 1995, 1996, and 1998. Her top finishes at state meets include a fourth in the 200-meter relay and fourth in the 100-breast. Morgan also was an Academic All American all four years of high school. After high school, she continued her swimming at the University of Georgia where she helped the Dawgs win an unprecedented three National Swimming Championships. Morgan was team captain her senior, was on the SEC Scholar Athlete Roll all four years, and competed in the 2000 Olympic Trials at Indianapolis. She graduated from UGA in 2002 with a B.A. in Political Science, and earned a Master’s in Early Child Education in 2006. Morgan resides in Milwaukee, WI, and is a English Language Learners Specialist at Messmer Catholic Schools. She married David Klaus of Milwaukee.

Ron Green – Track and Field Coach (2003-2008)

Coach Green started at Holy Innocents’ in 2003 and his effect on track and field program was immediate. During his tenure with the program, he coached seventeen state champs in events such as the long jump, 100, 200, 800, 1600 and 3200 meters. In 2004, he guided the team to HIES’s first and only State Track and Field Championship - the title came in Double AA (which is a stronger division for Track & Field) and the Bears also won the Region Championship this same year. This has only been done twice in school history. In both 2006 and 2007 the Girls Track program placed 3rd in the state. This past May, he was inducted in the Gwinnett County Track & Field Hall of Fame. In Gwinnett he coached a future NCAA champ and had another who participated in two Olympic games. Besides his legendary track accomplishments, Coach Green also spent many years as an assistant coach in the football program; he was on staff in the beginning years of the HIES program where he helped get the Bears off to winning ways early.

Lucie Bornholm – Coach

Lucie was at HI for 35 years – in this time she coached 7th/8th grade girls’ basketball, Middle School track & field, 7th/8th grade cheerleading, she co-started the cross country program and helped guide the Bears to region titles from 1994 through 1997. She also co-started JV track and field. She continued to coach cross country and track until she took a hiatus in 2000-2005 to raise her girls. Lucie later returned to be an assistant coach for Middle School cross country and continued until the fall of 2015. In the nine years since her return, the Middle School cross country team has won plenty of meets along with six straight state titles! If this isn’t enough, Lucie has had the privilege of coaching 25 of the 33 current HIES Wall of Fame members, not to mention the best runners in school history and several state champions. Lucie walked the athletic fields and the classrooms as one of the most legendary and loved faculty member/coaches in the history of Holy Innocents’. We all love Lucie!

Writer’s note: I can’t report on this story without stating what our beloved Lucie did after receiving her honor. The class person that she is, she came up into the press box and promptly hugged and thanked each and every person in there. First of all, the press box was VERY crowded. Second of all, I’m not even sure she knew all the people in there in the first place! This is yet another testament to the person she is. In summary, we love Lucie, Lucie loves us. Go Bears!
