Former Corrections Officer Accused Of Sexual Assault

Sandy Springs Police have charged Matthew Moore, 48, in connection to a string of crimes dating back as far as 10 years.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — A former corrections officer from Alabama has been arrested in connection to a string of sexual assaults reported in and around Sandy Springs, police said Tuesday.

Matthew Moore, 48, of St. Clair County, Alabama, has been charged with aggravated sodomy, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, aggravated assault with intent to rape, two counts of aggravated assault and false imprisonment, the Police Department said.

Sandy Springs police say Moore, a former corrections officer with the Alabama Department of Corrections, is believed to be "responsible for a series of sexual assaults, some of which occurred within our community."

"This investigation has been both exhaustive and intensive, as we have reviewed cases going back over 10 years," the agency added. "We believe there may be other victims who have yet to come forward."

Moore, 48, of Springville, Alabama, was arrested March 30 for an assault on a woman reported in November 2015 at a Sandy Springs hotel. Moore was taken into custody by Department Of Corrections Investigation and Intelligence Division officials after warrants were issued by the Fulton County Superior Court.

Moore was employed at the St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville and had been with the ADOC since 2001, the agency added. ADOC said he immediately resigned from his position at the time of his arrest and is awaiting extradition back to Georgia.
