Fulton Dad Charged With Murder In Child's Shooting Death

Sandy Springs Police say they arrested the man after his 2-year-old child was shot to death due to an "improperly secured firearm."

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — A Sandy Springs father is facing murder charges in connection with the shooting death of his 2-year-old child Wednesday in the 2600 block of Sandalwood Drive, police said.

Sandy Springs Police said they arrested Richard Willis after his child was shot to death due to an "improperly secured firearm."

Officers arrived around 2 p.m., and the child was pronounced dead at the scene. The child has not been identified.

Willis was arrested on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children, and he was taken to the Fulton County Jail, police said.

The deadly shooting came on the same day Gwinnett County Police say a 4-year-old boy shot himself in the hand in the 3400 block of Braselton Highway in Dacula. The boy's injuries were not life threatening, police said.
