Here are the top three stories today in Sandy Springs:

  1. A full closure of Peachtree Dunwoody Road will take place this weekend. The closure started yesterday, Jan. 13, at 9:00 p.m. and will last through 5:00 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16. With the closure, crews will expedite the construction progress on the I-285 bridge over Peachtree Dunwoody Road. Only emergency vehicles needing hospital access will be allowed access. (Sandy Springs, Georgia: City News)
  2. The bipartisan review panel, appointed by the State Election Board to review Fulton County's handling of elections, submitted its report yesterday, Jan. 13. According to the report, the Fulton County elections office does not need a state takeover and "replacing the board would not be helpful and would in fact hinder the ongoing improvements to Fulton County elections." (11 Alive)
  3. In nearby Dunwoody, an 18-year-old man from Tennessee was arrested after allegedly firing a gun through the wall of an apartment unit on Lake Ridge Lane on Dec. 26. A woman reported a bullet had been fired through her apartment wall near her daughter, son, and nephew. The suspect initially lied to police and has been charged with false representations to police and firing a weapon. (Appen Media)

  • Jere Chang, a Fulton County elementary school teacher, said "tornado drills worked" on Thursday, Jan. 12, during Fulton County's tornado warning. Teachers, students, and parents had to be ushered into the school and tornado safety plans had to be adopted for more people. Chang said, "We do tornado drills frequently, but not with parents." But ultimately the tornado drills were effective and everyone was able to shelter safety through the warning. (11 Alive)

The family-friendly event starts at 1:00 p.m. and will feature interactive art projects and a film designed to celebrate, educate, and share the teachings of Dr. King. (Sandy Springs via Facebook)
