Riverwood Teachers Use Summer Break To Sharpen Skills
The educators took part in at least 3 professional development courses to better serve students during the 2016-17 school year.
SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- While many of their students avoided classroom-related activities during their summer vacations, educators at Riverwood International Charter School didn't use the break to slow down.
Numerous Riverwood teachers, administrators and staff participated in a series of professional development opportunities designed to sharpen their skills and better serve students for the 2016-17 school year.
Three courses were offered for educators, including Teach for Excellence, AVID and the Summer Summit.

Teach for Excellence (TFE) is a nationally based program that brings creative, student-centric learning strategies to classrooms. A total of 10 Riverwood teachers were selected to participate in a week-long seminar in Colorado were they learned unique strategies and tactics for enhancing the classroom experience.
Historically, teachers who have participated in TFE are among the most well-respected and highly regarded instructors at Riverwood.

Six teachers also took part in AVID training this summer. AVID, or Advancement via Individual Determination, is a disciplined classroom structure designed to prepare students who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education for success in high school, college and in life.
High school students are selected for this important program based on an application and interview process.
The Fulton County Schools Professional Learning Department held its annual Summer Summit June 20-21 in Atlanta.
Seven administrators and faculty members from Riverwood, including Principal Dr. Robert Shaw, learned about “purposeful learning” and how to navigate a personalized learning environment.
