Sandy Springs Conservancy’s New Trail Blazers Walks begin Saturday

The Sandy Springs Conservancy (SSC) invites the public to participate in Trail Blazers, a new series of guided walks and hikes in local parks beginning this weekend!

SSC's inaugural Trail Blazers walk will take place at Crooked Creek Park in Sandy Springs this Saturday, May 7 at 8:30 am! The morning walk will be led by city of Sandy Springs Councilman John Paulson who was a long-time advocate of the trail at Crooked Creek. Participate in a lovely one-mile hike through wetlands and diverse forests with a view of the Chattahoochee River. Walks are limited to 25 participants and registration is required so please sign up today!

About Crooked Creek

Crooked Creek is a city of Sandy Springs park located in the panhandle, the northeastern area of the city. The park features a one-mile walking trail along its namesake stream connecting the passive city park to the Holcomb Bridge section of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

Crooked Creek's natural-surface foot path runs behind the Retreat at River Park, an apartment complex and was built in 2020. The Holcomb Bridge National Recreation area is more than 40 acres of woodland along the Chattahoochee River. The Crooked Creek trail is for pedestrian use only, no bicycles are allowed. There are no facilities at the park or trail head. The park is located at 3000 River Exchange Drive, Atlanta, GA 30350.

About SSC Trail Blazers

Each month, Sandy Springs Conservancy Trail Blazers walks/hikes will take place at different parks in Sandy Springs and neighboring communities. SSC will provide knowledgeable guides from the community to share the history of the park and to lead small groups on hikes through the park and trails. Sandy Springs Conservancy Trail Blazers events will be scheduled for the first Saturday of each month except for July and September when they will be held on the second Saturday due to holidays. The goal of the program is to increase awareness and enjoyment of our city parks among residents and to get people outdoors to appreciate nature in our community.

• The program kicks off on Saturday, May 7 at 8:30 am at Crooked Creek, a city of Sandy Springs park located in the northeastern part of Sandy Springs. The walk will be led by Sandy Springs City Councilman John Paulson.

• On Saturday, June 4 at 8:30 am, SSC Trail Blazers will explore the Abernathy Greenway. SSC founding member and past Executive Director Linda Bain will lead the walk through the Playable Art Park, the Sculpture Garden and the Southside trail.

SSC Trail Blazers guided walks will be limited to 25 participants. Participants must register online, sign a liability waiver, and meet at the scheduled park or trailhead location. Future Trail Blazers walks/hikes will be scheduled through October and will resume next spring. Additional sites to explore may include Big Trees Forest, Lost Corner Preserve, Morgan Falls Overlook Park, Windsor Meadows, Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and other parks in Sandy Springs and neighboring communities.

The mission of the Sandy Springs Conservancy (SSC) is to create, conserve and connect parks and greenspace. SSC brings together stakeholders, builds partnerships, and provides funding
to jump-start greenspace projects throughout the city. The nonprofit was established in 2001 by citizens to preserve rapidly disappearing greenspace and recreation areas in Sandy Springs.
