Sandy Springs Ends Moratorium On Sale Of Fireworks

The Sandy Springs City Council on Tuesday approved an ordinance regulating retail consumer fireworks sales, effectively ending a moratorium imposed during the summer.

The ordinance, approved at the Nov. 3 meeting, describes the types of retail establishments permitted, with detail on permits needed from the city in order for the retailer to sell fireworks within Sandy Springs.

It also allows the sale of fireworks within the Commercial 2 Zone in the city. Sales will continue to be prohibited in the Overlay District, as well as within pawnshops, check-cashing establishments and through self-storage facilities.

Additionally, sales will not be permitted within 150 feet of nursing homes, hospitals, day care facilities, schools and any residential dwelling unit.

Hours of operation will be limited to the hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

To sell fireworks within Sandy Springs, the business owner must obtain a use permit with permit applications submitted to the Department of Community Development no later than 45 days prior to the commencement of sales.

The city’s Fire Marshall’s office will have oversight of the permit process. Usage of fireworks will continue to be regulated by the Sandy Springs fire codes and noise ordinance.
