Sen. Johnny Isakson Recovering From Back Surgery

Georgia's senior senator had the procedure on March 15 at Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital in Sandy Springs.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson is recovering in Sandy Springs after undergoing back surgery at Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital.

Isakson went under the knife Wednesday, March 15 to tackle a sacral hairline stress fracture that developed in the last few days, his office said.

That fracture, the office added, stemmed from the senator's recovery from a previous back surgery in February to address deterioration in his spine caused by severe arthritis.

Dr. Keith D. Osborn of Resurgens Orthopaedics performed both surgeries, and said the latest operation was "successful. Dr. Osborn added it will also allow the senator to "quickly resume the rehabilitation process" he began following the February procedure.

“This second procedure will help shore up the reconstruction of my lower spine and will help prevent a minor fracture from becoming a bigger problem,” said the 72-year-old public servant. “I am working closely with my doctors and physical therapists to ensure that my recovery ultimately leads to a long road of wellness. I look forward to returning to Washington as soon as possible with a new and improved back to continue working on behalf of Georgians.”
